WHAT WE DO

Our works

CHILDREN IN HAZARDOUS WORK (CHaW)

Our CHaW program is created to provide both preventive and remedial services for children who find themselves under the 3 types of street-connected children. The children on the street (good ties & return home), Children of the streets (lost ties & occasionally return home) and children of street families (detached from family). The objective of the project is to reduce the number of children involved in hazardous work/activities and also promote the rights of children in street situations. We also seek to promote peace and security among street-connected children by equipping key stakeholders with the requisite training to provide school social services. The project seeks to reintegrate beneficiaries into formal education.

READING IS BASIC (RIB)

Since reading is one of the basic skills that form the foundational blocks of education, it is crucial – especially for young learners – to be exposed to literature and reading possibilities as much as possible to instil in students the habit and essence of reading. Data from the Ghana Education Service in 2018 on the provisional results of students, who sat their final examination, revealed that about 78.21% of candidates failed in their exams especially English language. This failure stems from the fact that students have poor reading habits, inadequate library facilities, and are faced with a decline in the teaching of grammar.

LEARNING HUB

The SCEF learning hub is a haven for children in the Jamestown community for supplemental learning. The hub serves two major purposes namely; a 3-month rehabilitation program for newly rescued children in street situations providing them with life skills, basic numeracy, literacy, and creativity. It also provides after-school supplemental learning programs for school-going children in the community. The learning hub comprises the Classroom, Craft Lab, Library, and Play Space.

CENTRE FOR GRASSROOT ENTERPRISE (CGE)

The Centre for Grassroots’ Enterprise empowers street-connected families through capacity-building workshops, employment opportunities, and entrepreneurial support to aid them to be self-reliant and stay off the streets. As an exit strategy, we involve the parents/guardians of our
beneficiaries into sustainable social enterprises with the goal that in a maximum of 5 years, they are empowered to take responsibility for their children’s education and upbringing. We have led parents to form independent Village Savings and Loans Associations (VS&LA) and cooperatives of microenterprises.
